Stone selection, generally speaking, is not based on official standards one can make reference to, as there are no "official" grades in this sector. Greece, not accidentally, early became one of leading countries in quarrying & exportation. Since ancient times, Greeks were among the first who started the stone production. Of course, they were among the first who appreciated the beauty of the Greek marble types and used them in building fine monuments and sculpturing masterpieces. No wonder, in many languages, most of the terms that are used to define "marble" (such as mármore, mármol, mramor, marmor, marbre, мрамор, marmo, marmer, marmori, mermer, marmur, marmura, marmure, márvány etc.) are deriving from the greek word (gr) μάρμαρο–ν, sing.: μάρμαρο–ν, MAPMAPO-N (marmaro–n) & pl.: μάρμαρα, MAPMAPA (marmara) from the verb μαρμαίρω (marmairo) which means "to shine" ("shining" stone). | ||
